In 1995 Scottish pop-rock band and local-lads-done-good, Wet Wet Wet decided to stick some of the proceeds from then smash-hit "Love Is All Around" into their ailing hometown football club Clydebank.
Unfortunately for The Bankies their sponsors were the closest they would get to a No.1 spot before suffering relegation from the First Division at the end of the 1999-2000 season.
AC Milan, one of world football's greatest teams was for a single season sponsored by the fashion industry's least desirable denim brand -Pooh Jeans. The Rossoneri, funnily enough shat the bed that season suffering relegation from Serie A.
In the mid 2000s Bavarian club FC Nuremberg were sponsored by a jeans company of their own- Mister Lady. Not content with having the rugged mens and womenswear manufacturer's name splashed across their shirts the German side too suffered the humiliation of relegation while under the denim brand's sponsorship.
From 1989-91 Scottish club St Johnstone shirts were emblazoned with name of textile and yarn manufacturers Bonar. Need we say anymore?
Why, oh why the Baggies had a prominent No Smoking symbol taking centre-stage on their shirts for the 1985-86 season we will never know. But we admire the decision makers at the club for taking into consideration the health of their fans.
